Gulf Middle School Wireless Communication Device (WCD) Policy

Students are allowed to bring cell phones and other devices (WCD) on campus. All cell phones and other devices (WCD) need to be silenced/powered off and placed in students’ bookbag upon arrival on campus where they will remain throughout the day. Students will not be able to use their cell phones during passing but will be able to access cell phones and other devices (WCD) during their lunchtime once they enter the cafeteria.

Teachers may, at their discretion, have students use their personal devices for academic reasons. Upon completion of the lesson, students will be expected to silence/power off the device and place the device back into their book bag before leaving the classroom.

Our goal at Gulf Middle School is to allow students to use their electronic devices in a responsible and appropriate way that does not interfere with our commitment to learning. Responsible possession and use are the priority and students who do not follow the guidelines for electronic devices will forfeit their privileges. We would also like to remind students that possession and use of electronic devices is a privilege, not a right. It is also important to remember students bring electronic devices to school at their own risk and the school is not responsible for damage, loss or theft.

Electronic devices should be silenced/powered off and properly stored when students arrive on campus. They should not be seen or heard during classes or in common areas like hallways, restrooms, and locker rooms, etc.

Individual teachers, at their discretion, may allow the use of electronic devices in the classroom setting. The use of earbuds/headphones is limited to the classroom, with permission from the teacher, and in the cafeteria at lunchtime. Earbuds/headphones should never be worn (including around the neck) in common areas. All electronic violations will be handled as an infraction of the Pasco County Student Code of Conduct will result in a discipline referral for defiance.

The change in policy is to reduce the distractions/disruptions in the classroom, the virtual interactions among the student body, as well as, keep the focus of our campus on student learning. When families need to communicate with their child, they are welcome to call the front office 727-774-8000, and we will get a message to them. In addition, if your child needs to contact a family member, they will be permitted to use the school phones, when appropriate.
