Gulf Middle School Peer Counseling Application 24-25

Thank you for your interest in Peer Counseling! If you attended GMS this year, we will get the needed recommendations from your teachers. If not, please provide two names of teachers and the name of your 23-24 school.

Course Description: This yearlong course for 7/8 grade students provides reciprocal and social benefits to students with disabilities and their peers without disabilities. Students will learn about academic engagement, social barriers, leadership, problem-solving, and other disability-related topics such as historical perspectives, inclusion, Universal Design for Learning, person-first language, presumed competence, social justice for minority populations, and media representation for diverse people.

Course Expectations: Peers must be on track for grades, behavior and attendance. During the school year, Peers receive weekly assessment grades by their Peer Advisor based on the course performance standards. Their Peer Advisor will also monitor to ensure that they continue to be on track. If a Peer is not successful, the advisor may recommend a probationary period, reassignment, or transfer to another course.
